Dark January Days

Its still pretty dark outside in the morning and evening. The weather is miserable.

Right now its as I write this, it’s pouring down and despite being 2pm, it looks like its 8pm. It’s that dark. Its not exactly the most inspiring time to get creative. So what can you do to get motivated? Here’s four top tips that help me get the creative juices flowing again.

  1. Take action! Yes, I know it sounds obvious, but its easy to moan about how uninspired you are whilst not doing anything about it. Just writing this newsletter is in itself sparking my creative interior and getting my brain working. Take one small step. Start writing; start drawing; get out the camera and shoot. Whatever it is for you just do something!
  2. Move away from the computer –  As wonderful as they are -and i’m a bit of a geek when it comes to technology, computers can sometimes be uninspiring. You get absorbed into the world of the screen where anything outside becomes almost unreal, when in fact its what’s on the computer screen that’s virtual and around it what’s real. Take a step back and go wandering -even just around your house or room. Then when you’re disconnected you might be amazed at what the now different and ‘real’ perspective inspires in you.
  3. Review inspirational blog posts  – I use the Readability app which allows me to store webpages offline to read later in a newspaper style format. Its incredibly useful and I use it constantly. It means I have an archive of posts where I can go to to inspire me whenever I need it. I can read on my tablet or phone and switch off wi-fi to avoid internet distractions. There are many other apps which do the same thing so just search ‘offline website reader’ in Google and see what comes up.
  4. Mini-hubs – Nine heads are better than one! Chatting to others can be a great source of inspiration. Joining a mini-hub can mean you have up to nine other people cheering you on, helping get you motivated, inspired, in your creative flow and helping you stay accountable to fulfil your creative new years resolutions.
